Psychosomatics of the employee.

What provokes stress and how to neutralize it?
Frankly speaking, the "diseases" of the 21st century, including neurotic disorders and depression, are directly related to the conditions of increased competition in which people have to live. And the larger the company, the higher the level of competitive selection - retention in the workplace and promotion, and the more often managers experience heart attacks, apathy, phobias and nervous breakdowns. World practice shows that those companies paying decent attention to the psychological and physical relaxation of employees are the ones that are able to win in today's global competition.

Where did the "fashion" for the services of clinical psychologists in business come from?

Approximately since the 70's of the last (20th century) launched a "boom" of somatic and mental disorders, at the same time the world economy began to frequently fall into "crisis" zones. It was the crisis economic phenomena led researchers to the study of the psychological climate in the team. So there were different interpretations of such phenomena as bullying, harassment and many others, but it is important to understand that the beginning of all beginnings is undoubtedly Stress!

So, what causes stress in the average office worker:

  1. imitation of work. Yes, yes, as ridiculous as it sounds! Because it is constant anxiety, fear of being caught up in the process of "doing nothing"; lack of cycles necessary for the brain to complete and lack of satisfaction from being in the workplace.
  2. violation of circadian rhythms, rush mode. Work in the evening and at night, work without proper rest.
  3. absence or improper use of emotional and physical release, lack of mobility. In the firm where one of my clients works, they suggested playing computer games as an alternative to work at the computer. This approach instead of the intended discharge only worsens the situation. Whereas a mini gym, table tennis, relaxation room and meditation could be more effective.
  4. excessive control. Time control (what time he/she left/drove in, how long he/she ate lunch, how long he/she chatted with someone). Controlling resources (how much coffee he/she drinks, how much paper, copier, printer he/she uses). Control that the employee is only busy with work all the time, no personal correspondence, internet and so on.
  5. ringelman effect: work for others, the impossibility to delegate some responsibilities. When a person performs a task, he is responsible for each stage and tries to do it in a proper and timely way. If the same task is divided into several people, the feeling of time is lost, people drag out the performance of work, the quality decreases, and often the person in charge has to double-check, adjust, redo the work all the time!
  6. dissatisfaction with the boss. Studies show that the most prone to cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases are those employees who can not directly express dissatisfaction with unreasonable demands, humiliation by the superiors.
  7. fear of dismissal, fear of change, inability to plan the near future.
  8. when there is more negativity than positivity in the workplace and in the working process.
  9. an excess of paperwork and an excess of the computer.
  10. excessive planning.
  11. distrust of the employees, absence of friends. In the collective it is every person for himself, there is no place for joint games and communication.
  12. gender imbalance. Just the other day one client said that it was easier for her to work in a warehouse with the movers, who accepted her as she was, than in an intellectual team, where someone in the eye and someone behind the eyes condemns everything from her appearance to the details of her personal life and her children.

Now imagine a situation in which an employee is bullied or harassed. Then each of these points is multiplied (in addition to the fact that the job duties lead to the violation of natural processes, so in a situation of artificially created harassment, most of the work has to be redone, finished in the mode of rushes, constantly "keep a face" and answer to the repeated anger of the bosses!

The whole base of the pyramid of basic human needs is destroyed. There is no possibility to have a normal meal, sleep, rest! On restoring the ruined job it is necessary to spend the personal resource. There is no feeling of safety and security either, besides the fear of being fired, there is a constant fear of violating the boundaries of "self" and "my body". There is no possibility to satisfy the need to belong to a specific group and the need for respect and recognition.

All this knocks the ground out from under the feet and the employee is left either to quit or to stay in the competitive "race", and to sublimate psychological problems through the body!

Cardiovascular disease and panic disorders are the most common requests that today's successful young men between the ages of 28 and 40 seek medical psychologists and doctors. Women more often get eating disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis and colitis.

What disorders are most often associated with the phenomenon of office stress?

Psychological disorders

  • decreased memory, distracted attention, frequent mistakes;
  • employee gets tired often and quickly, does not enjoy the work done;
  • decreased sense of humor;
  • symptoms of emotional burnout;
  • inability to finish work on time;
  • hyperexcitability, rapid speech, overly abrupt or aggressive reactions;
  • sleep disorders, nightmares, insomnia or somnolence.

Psychosomatic disorders

  • depression;
  • various phobias, anxiety disorders;
  • obsessive-compulsive disorders and panic disorders;
  • appetite disorders, manifested both by feelings of "malnutrition", or impaired perception of the taste of food, and by decreased appetite. In cases of prolonged bullying in women's groups, anorexia and bulimia are most typical;
  • dizziness, vascular dystonias, vegetative crises, etc.;
  • pain of various etiologies unrelated to a specific disease, including headaches, back pain, etc.

Psychosomatic diseases

  • cardiovascular disease;
  • migraines;
  • allergic diseases;
  • skin diseases (psoriasis, dermatitis);
  • diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, both classical gastritis and various ulcers, as well as irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, etc.;
  • cycle disorders and gynecological diseases in women;
  • diseases of the respiratory system, including asthma;
  • alcoholism and other forms of addiction.

Due to the fact that men tend to tolerate and suppress negative emotions more than women, psychosomatic disorders and diseases occur more often in these men and are more difficult to correct.

When psychosomatic pathology has come to the surface, unfortunately, it is impossible to cope with it alone. First of all it is necessary to undergo a thorough examination, to establish a real diagnosis and start treatment. At the same time you should deal with a medical psychologist to find suitable methods of correction, so that the condition does not worsen and does not repeat in the future.

In my work I use impulse-color therapy - an individual video file in which a personal set of color highlights in a certain sequence is recorded. While watching the personal sessions of color correction the person's psychoemotional state improves (anxiety disappears, conscious and unconscious fears are eliminated), stress level decreases without taking sedatives. This type of therapy has medical certification, an in-depth scientific basis, and satisfactory results from clinical studies. I am absolutely sure that this type of therapy will give positive results when used by the employees of your company.
